“Hey, Brian. How's it going?”

Brian stepped into the principal's office, almost feeling like he was in trouble, but he had a conversation to get out of the way. “I've got something I'd like to talk about.”

Jay Durango, the middle aged, kind hearted man folded his hands together on his desk. “Go ahead.”

“I...” He held back a sigh. “I think this is going to be my last year of coaching.” He swallowed hard. Coaching the boys was something he'd loved ever since taking the position six years ago. He'd been through hell and back since then.

His friend and fellow colleague's eyes widened. “What? Why?”

“I don't want this out yet, but...” Brian pulled up a seat, folded his large frame onto it, and explained the situation.

By the end, the man's eyes were full of exactly what Brian didn't want: pity, sadness, and concern.

“I'm so damn sorry, Brian.”

“I don't know how this will affect teaching, but at least as of right now, I'm not going anywhere with that. But I need vision to coach.”

“The team is going to be so upset over this, but I get it. There's nothing that can be done?”

Another question he hated. “No. There's no cure for this.”

“If there's anything we can do...”

Everyone knew his story. The past few years, Cinnamon Bay had come to his rescue when Chloe died. Now they would probably make a bigger deal and put him front and center. He appreciated the caring and concern that would come, but he sure didn't want the attention.

Still, it would come.

“So far, I don't think there's anything to be done. This will happen gradually, or it could happen soon. I don't know what to prepare for. There aren't a whole lot of resources in town for something like this.”

“Well then, maybe it's time that changes. We can't have one of our own going through this with little assistance. We'll do everything we can when the time comes, Brian.”

“Yeah, thanks.” He kept the bitterness out of his voice. The whole 'why me' pity party had taken hold this week, though he'd kept the majority of the thoughts to himself. He needed to be positive for the girls, and if Tess knew he'd been harboring these angry feelings, he didn't know what she'd do.

“Hey, is Mr. Taylor in here?” The door opened, and one of the secretaries stepped in.

“I am. What's going on?” Brian asked.

“It's about Alice.”

He stood, on high alert. “What's wrong with Alice?”

“She's on her way here right now. There's been… She got into an altercation with another student.”

Brian blew out a breath. Great. They'd had a few good weeks since Alice's last outburst.

Moments of frustrated silence followed. Brian didn't know what to say, and until Alice got here with further explanation, he had nothing to go on.

She walked in, head low, behind her teacher.

“Hi, Mr. Taylor.” Though a co-worker, Mrs. Phillips addressed him as a parent right now.

“Hey. So what's going on?” He glared at his silent daughter.

“Alice picked a fight with a student.” The words hit him square in the chest.
